Breakdown of Allocated Funds
Governor Alia disclosed that out of the N5 billion designated by the Federal Government as palliative support for each state, Benue had already received N2 billion.
He emphasized that the remaining balance was in the process of being delivered. The N5 billion relief package consisted of two components: N2.4 billion as an interest-free loan and N2.6 billion as a grant.
Multi-Sectoral Utilization
The Governor assured the public that his administration was committed to the responsible utilization of the funds. Various sectors including transportation, food, agriculture, education, and human capital development were designated to benefit from the financial aid.
Education Support
Governor Alia highlighted the state’s commitment to education, revealing plans to cover the registration fees for students taking the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and National Examination Council (NECO) exams for the 2023/24 session. This initiative aimed to alleviate the financial burden on families and encourage academic pursuits.
Empowerment Initiatives
In a move to empower women and youth, the Governor revealed that 5,000 women would receive grants through cooperative efforts, while 2,000 youths would undergo training in six different ICT programs. This strategy aimed to equip young individuals with relevant skills for the modern job market.
Pension and Transportation Support
Governor Alia announced that part of the allocated funds would be used to provide one month’s worth of pension payments to state and local government pensioners. Additionally, the government planned to supply 100 buses to the state-owned transport company, Benue Links, to alleviate transportation challenges. Township shuttles in Makurdi, Gboko, and Otukpo towns were also on the agenda, further enhancing public transportation options.
Relief Materials Distribution
Clarifying the allocation of relief materials, Governor Alia stated that the state had indeed received five trucks carrying a total of 3,000 bags of rice from the Federal Government. He further specified that each local government within the state would receive 100 bags of rice, ensuring a fair distribution of resources.
