Thousands of passengers stranded as irate trailer drivers block Yola/Gombe highway

Thousands of travellers are currently held stranded at Lafiya in Lamurde local government area of Adamawa State after irate trailer drivers blocked the Yola/Gombe highway.

A traveller from Kaduna told our reporter that the trailer drivers blocked the highway at Lafiya since 10:00am in the morning over a fracas between officials of the state revenue board and the trailer drivers.

“We are currently stranded near Cham a border town between Adamawa and Gombe states. I’m on my way to Yola from Kaduna and I’m afraid we will have to sleep here.

“The trailer drivers decided to block the highway after one of them was allegedly manhandled by the officials of the state revenue board. But it is surprising that the incident began since 10:00am but up till now it was not resolved.

“As a result, there is a long traffic hold up from Lafiya up to Cham where we are currently held up. Thousands of women, children and even the aged are currently stranded as there is no way one can even make a detour back to Gombe,” a passenger who simply identified himself as Ibrahim told our reporter on phone.

The image maker of Adamawa State Police command, SP Sulaiman Nguroje when contacted, confirmed the incident saying that police have been drafted to the area and they have opened the road.

“Yes the incident happened since morning. But the commissioner of police has drafted men to the scene and already the highway has been reopened to the traffic. The police is also carrying out a discreet report to unravel the immediate and remote cause of the imbroglio,” he said.
