The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), has called on Nigerian students to create awareness on financial skills for their future.
The move, the Insurance Corporation observed will equally reduce the trend of dependence on white collar jobs from the government.
The Programme Coordinator of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), Mrs Regina Dimlong made the call Thursday during the 2023 Financial Literacy Day celebration held in Yola the Adamawa State capital.
Dimlong said this year’s theme “Plan Your Money, Plant Your Future”, is aimed at engaging about 110 Secondary Schools in Adamawa State but however only 10 secondary schools are participating.
The programme according to her, is designed to “expose the young students to basic financial skills, to make them financially conscious of financial issues”.
She said the workshop would among other things, boost the horizon of the students on Investment, Budgeting, Investment and other relevant financial skills.
According to her, the participants will also be oriented on financial management, to enable them to make informed financial decisions in future, saying “we want to catch them young”.
Dimlong explained that the initiative was presently being observed simultaneously across the 36 states in Nigeria, saying the programme was one of the financial inclusion strategies aimed at creating awareness on financial skills.
Also speaking, the State Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Mrs Wilbina Jackson represented by the Director in the Ministry, Samaila Mukhtar, lauded the NDIC for organising the programme for students in the State.
Wilbina Jackson described the event as desirous and timely, stressing that “we would continue to support such initiatives that would broaden the intellectual capacity of the students”.
The State Coordinator of NDIC, Mr Victor Ndima Egba described the initiative as an excellent move in educating the students on the basic rudiments of financial skills.
He advised students to make judicious application of the knowledge they acquired during the lecture and the question and answer sessions.
