Chief Obasanjo recalled his attempt to engage with the leaders of Boko Haram during its early days to comprehend their motivations and aspirations.

He noted that contrary to popular misconceptions, he discovered that the organization’s members sought a better life and expressed their belief in Sharia Law, which is already enshrined in Nigeria’s constitution.

The former president revealed that, some members of the outlawed sect had acquired education but were unable to find employment informing real concerns about their livelihood.

Addressing a concern from the audience regarding the government’s inclination toward politically driven measures rather than people-centered ones, Chief Obasanjo emphasized the urgent need to avoid scapegoating and focus on the core challenges plaguing the nation.

He pointed out that governance and leadership play a pivotal role in tackling these issues. The former President highlighted the importance of valuing and investing in the nation’s population, particularly the over 20 million out-of-school children.

He noted that by recognizing the potential consequences of neglecting education and livelihood opportunities, such as breeding grounds for future extremist groups, Chief Obasanjo underscored the necessity of prioritizing the welfare and development of Nigerian citizens.

Since Boko Haram’s inception in 2009, the outlawed sect has wreaked havoc across Nigeria, leading to numerous casualties and security concerns.

The rise in attacks, bombings, and violent incidents in the Northeast and other regions can be traced back to the underlying factors of poverty and unemployment.

Chief Obasanjo warned that neglecting the well-being of the population and dismissing socioeconomic disparities would have severe consequences for the country’s stability.

He urged leaders to acknowledge their role in perpetuating poverty and emphasized that combating this issue should be a national priority adding thaty doing so, Nigeria can address the root causes of Boko Haram and prevent the emergence of similar extremist groups in the future.
