The recent scandal surrounding the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) top scorer has caused a storm of criticism on social media.

Umeh’s remarkable achievement garnered significant attention and praise. Meanwhile, Mmesoma had been making headlines after claiming to be the highest scorer in the exam.

However, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) debunked her claim and revealed that she had actually scored 249, not 362 as she had previously stated.

The revelation led to a heated controversy, prompting Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra to establish an eight-man panel to investigate the matter.

As the panel proceeded with its inquiry, Mmesoma appeared on a television program where she retracted her claim of scoring 362.

The panel’s subsequent report confirmed Mmesoma’s manipulation of the results and recommended that she apologize to JAMB.

The report revealed that Mmesoma had admitted to manipulating the results herself using her phone and printing the forged results at a cybercafe in Uruagu, Nnewi.:

Several Nigerians who had initially supported Mmesoma expressed their disappointment and apologized for their previous stance.

Former Minister of Education, Dr Oby Ezekwesili, who had called for an independent technology investigation, acknowledged the findings of the inquiry and expressed satisfaction with the process.

Social media users like Fred Chukwuelobe, Modestus Chukwulaka, Bethrand Chukulobi, and Ebony Blossom voiced their disappointment and demanded that Mmesoma face the consequences of her actions while emphasizing the need for her to apologize to JAMB and the Nigerian public.

Recognition and Reward for Authentic Achievement:

In a positive development, Kamsiyochukwu Umeh, the true top scorer, received recognition and a substantial cash gift.

Dr Eric Umeofia, the CEO and President of Erisco Foods Limited, presented Umeh with N2.5 million as a reward for her exceptional performance.

The generous gesture aimed to motivate and encourage academic excellence among Nigerian students.

The controversy surrounding the UTME top scorer has shed light on the issue of examination malpractice and its consequences.

“While Ejikeme Mmesoma faced severe criticism and backlash for her manipulation of the UTME results, Kamsiyochukwu Umeh emerged as the deserving top scorer.

“The actions of individuals like Dr Eric Umeofia, who rewarded Umeh for his achievement, highlight the importance of acknowledging and encouraging academic excellence.

“This incident serves as a reminder of the need for integrity in educational assessments and the consequences of attempting to deceive the system,” an analyst Sani Shehu said.
