House of Reps speaker pledges constitutional roles for traditional rulers

In a significant move aimed at recognizing the pivotal role of traditional rulers in Nigeria’s peaceful coexistence and development, Abbas Tajudeen, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, has pledged to ensure that traditional rulers are assigned constitutional roles.

This commitment was made during his first visit to Zaria since assuming office as Speaker on June 13.

Tajudeen, who also holds the traditional title of Iyan Zazzau, emphasized the importance of traditional institutions and called for their recognition in the 1999 Constitution.

Accompanied by principal officers and over 50 members of the House, Tajudeen received a warm welcome from a jubilant crowd in Zaria.

During his visit to the palace of the Emir of Zazzau, Amb. Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, Speaker Abbas Tajudeen acknowledged the critical roles traditional rulers play in fostering peace and development in Nigeria.

He commended his colleagues in the House for their immense support and thanked the people of Zaria for entrusting him with the opportunity to represent them.

Tajudeen expressed his commitment to delivering on their mandate and sought the support and prayers of the Emir and the entire community for a successful tenure.

In his address, Speaker Tajudeen recalled the zonal hearings on constitutional amendment held three years ago, during which the issue of granting constitutional roles to traditional rulers was raised.

He assured the Emir and the people of Zaria that the proposal would be revisited under his leadership as Speaker.

Tajudeen’s personal connection to Zaria as the Iyan Zazzau further reinforces his determination to pursue this cause.

By involving traditional rulers in the constitutional framework, the House of Representatives aims to tap into their wisdom and experience, seeking their advice on effective leadership strategies that will move the country forward.

The Speaker emphasized the importance of cooperation between the House of Representatives and traditional institutions throughout the North and the country at large.

He called for honest and constructive advice from traditional rulers, recognizing their invaluable contributions to political stability.

Tajudeen emphasized the need to create an environment where traditional rulers can thrive in their constitutional roles and contribute meaningfully to the progress of Nigeria.

By fostering a partnership between traditional rulers and the House, the nation can harness the collective strength of both institutions to overcome challenges and promote development.:

The Emir of Zazzau, Amb. Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, highlighted the significant contributions of Zaria to Nigerian politics over the years.

He recalled prominent figures from Zaria who held national positions, including former President Yakubu Gowon, former Vice-President Namadi Sambo, and now Speaker Abbas Tajudeen.

The Emir expressed the gratitude of the Zazzau community and acknowledged the extensive political engagement of the people of Zaria since 1999.

He emphasized the willingness of the Emirate to support the House of Representatives’ endeavors and work collaboratively to achieve the common goal of a prosperous and united Nigeria.
