FG won’t reduce work days over fuel subsidy removal – HoS

During a parley with media executives in Abuja as part of the 2023 Civil Service Week, Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan emphasized that the federal government is actively working on palliatives to sustain civil servants and the Nigerian population following the withdrawal of petrol subsidy.
She allayed fears of reduced work days, stating that the government is committed to finding solutions without compromising civil servants’ productivity.

The government’s measures include procuring mass transit buses that will run on gas, with some vehicles already converted from diesel to gas-powered.
Additionally, workers’ salaries are under review for potential increments to offset the impact of the petrol subsidy removal.
Yemi-Esan shared updates on the ongoing verification exercise for civil servants across various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).
She said, the verification process, conducted through the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Personnel Information System, aims to identify and remove ghost workers while retaining legitimately employed civil servants. So far, 69,854 officers across the six geopolitical zones have been captured in the exercise.
Furthermore, the Head of the Service highlighted her office’s commitment to digitizing and promoting open government practices across MDAs.
The goals according to her include achieving a minimum of 50 percent functional official email addresses by 2025, a minimum of 40 percent automation of ministries’ work processes, and a minimum of 60 percent access to government services online.
These digitalization efforts according to her will streamline processes, enhance transparency, and improve service delivery.
Dr. Yemi-Esan emphasized the importance of providing clean, reliable, affordable, and sustainable power supply to guarantee the optimalization of the government’s digitalization policy.
She added that by addressing power challenges, the government aims to facilitate efficient utilization of digital tools and technologies.
Efforts to procure gas-powered buses and convert vehicles to gas align with the government’s larger sustainability goals, as gas is considered a cleaner and more environmentally friendly fuel source compared to diesel or petrol.
She noted that these initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to embracing green practices and reducing the carbon footprint.
