UNICEF’s involvement extends further by supporting the establishment of a National Humanitarian Situation Room, also referred to as the Humanitarian Emergency Operation Centre (H-EOC).
This strategic hub is envisaged to play a pivotal role in monitoring, mitigating, and proactively preventing humanitarian crises.
By cultivating such capabilities, Nigeria aims to bolster its resilience against unforeseen emergencies.
In response to these encouraging commitments, Dr. Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, conveyed the Federal Government’s dedication to lifting a staggering 133 million impoverished Nigerians out of destitution.
This ambitious goal is set to be achieved through a phased approach, with special emphasis on aiding the 71 million Nigerians living in extreme poverty, defined as subsisting on less than $1.95 per day. This endeavor aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 1, which aims to eradicate poverty globally by 2030.
Dr. Edu urged UNICEF to collaborate closely with the Federal Government in devising effective strategies for poverty alleviation. Emphasizing the urgency of the situation, she stressed the need for swift implementation of social programs to alleviate the burdens faced by the impoverished populace.
The Minister highlighted that Nigerians eagerly anticipate the full realization of the Renewed Hope agenda, signaling the need for prompt and robust action.
Reiterating the Ministry’s commitment to transparency and accountability, Dr. Edu assured the UNICEF delegation of their dedication to maintaining these principles throughout all processes. She emphasized the enduring partnership between the government and UNICEF, emphasizing that this collaboration would persist until the overarching goals are successfully attained.
