Stakeholders take far reaching recommendations to stem conflicts in Yola
Stakeholders including journalists, and NGOs have made far reaching recommendations to ensure de-escalation of conflicts by embracing early warning system and proactive journalism.
The stakeholders make the recommendations via a communique issued at the end of a one-day media training on early warning and early response, organized by Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC)/Transparency International in Nigeria (TI-NIGERIA) with support from Open Society Foundation Africa (OSF-Africa) on Thursday in Yola.

The communique was signed by Auwal Ibrahim Musa Rafsanjani, Executive Director, (CISLAC), Amina Abdullahi (Daily Trust), Adamawa state and Aisha Mohammed (FRCN).
Conflict-sensitive reportage is necessitated by the imperative to duly observe the complexity of society, different values and peculiar interest that either fuel or mitigate conflict in the course of reportage. Such conflict sensitive reportage must take into cognisance in-depth investigation, timely information dissemination, public enlightenment, sources protection, and public interest.
After exhaustive deliberations, the participants recommended that to achieve such noble goal of conflict de-escalation, adequate training and retraining programmes should be organized for journalists on conflict sensitive reportage, to elicit information credibility, factual presentation/dissemination of facts and objective analysis.
Participants also agreed that continuous monitoring of threat signals for objective interpretation, proactive analysis of reportage to elicit coordinated and timely response by relevant authorities must be embraced.
It is also agreed that integrating fundamental context of prevention, mitigation and preparedness in data gathering, information analysis to ensure conflict sensitive presentation must be upheld.
They recommended that journalists should embrace well-informed conflict analysis and factual reportage through adequate consideration to conflict profiling, causes, actors, so as to make informed, verifiable and balanced-reportage. .
It is also agreed that appropriate conflict profiling of threat signals in media reportage to fully understand the ecological, socio-cultural, political and economic context to prevent information misrepresentation and public discontent must be incorporated.
Journalists should also maintain a balanced-view in story development, analysis and publicity to prevent bias and public distrust, and ensure objective and factual reporting on threat signals and response effort.
