ADSIEC conducts LG polls amidst rejection by major opposition parties
The Adamawa State Independent Electoral Commission (ADSIEC) has today conducted the local government election which was rejected by major opposition political parties in the state.
It may be recalled that the two leading opposition political parties in the state, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP) have all distanced themselves from the election on the grounds of alleged impunity and circumvention of extant electoral laws by the Ahmad Umaru Fintiri led PDP government.

Voters have shunned most of the polling units visited by our correspondent as at 11:00 am in Jimeta just as officers and materials arrived late.
This paper learnt that there was significant voter turn out in Madagali, the home town of governor Ahmad Umaru Fintiri and Numan the home town of the deputy governor.
Governor Fintiri who casted his vote in the afternoon expressed satisfaction with the integrity of the electoral process just as his deputy professor Kaletapwa G. Farauta also endorsed the process.
But rejecting the election as shambolic the Labour Party chairmanship candidate of Michika local government, Anthony Zira said the election lacked any iota of integrity as it was conducted in flagrant disregard with electoral laws.
“I’m sad to tell you that what happened today is anything but election. In fact, no election took place. Instead we witnessed ballot vote stuffing, late arrival of election materials and disregard for lawful electoral process.
“That is why the people shunned the election while only PDP thugs were left stuffing the ballot boxes,” he said.
But disagreeing with the position of the position of Zira, the ADSIEC chairman, Mohammed Umar Jabu also gives a pass mark to the electoral process.
“We have monitored the election across the state and it started on good time in 20 local governments. We had little glitches in Yola North because of late arrival of materials. We witnessed little voter apathy in Yola North. But people came en masse to vote. Whatever happened at the polls is what we are going to announce as result. Election is like a game, there must be a winner and a loser,” he said.
Also commending the process, Dr. Philip Dan Duwe the executive chairman of Taraba State Independent Electoral Commission who led a team of 16 state Independent Electoral Commissioners to monitor the election said the conduct of the election was excellent.
“I’m here to lead members of the forum for state electoral commissions of Nigeria on a solidarity support. Sixteen of us are here, either chairmen or their representatives are physically here. That goes to show our solidarity with government and people of Adamawa State in compliance with the constitution.
“But very importantly, the security of the election is very commendable. The electoral commission is in charge of the process. You can see people going to vote. We have confirmed availability of election materials both sensitive and non sensitive. The electorates have turned out too,” he said.
