Beyond Blame: My Support of Dr Umar Ardo’s LND

It’s fascinating how some in Southern Nigeria believe that separating themselves from the country would magically solve all their problems. The idea that Nigeria’s troubles are solely a Northern Nigeria issue is a misconception that many cling to. But let’s set the record straight: Nigeria’s challenges aren’t confined to a particular region, religion, or tribe—they stem from a leadership crisis that affects us all.
When you listen to the grievances of some, you’d think all of Nigeria’s ministers, legislators, and governors were Northerners, as if the South had no role in the country’s governance. But that’s not the case. The truth is, the failure isn’t regional; it’s pervasive, cutting across all parts of the country. Until we come together to address these issues, we will continue to be misled by those exploiting our ignorance for their gain.

I strongly support the idea of restructuring, but not in the way it’s often misunderstood—as a superficial fix for economic gain. The call by Dr. Umar Ardo for a platform like The League of Northern Democrats (LND) is timely and deserves the backing of all well-meaning Nigerians. There’s a belief that if Nigeria gets it right, Africa will follow, and this applies to the North as well: if Northern Nigeria thrives, the entire country will benefit. Any initiative that scrutinizes the leadership failures in the North is worthy of our support.
Our nation’s tragedy lies not in our diversity, population, or resources, but in the absence of visionary leadership—a problem that afflicts both the North and the South. I hope the LND will focus on making the North economically viable and self-sufficient, attracting the young, intelligent Northerners who can uplift the region. Only then can the North earn the respect of the South. Anything less will be a missed opportunity.
Countries like Rwanda and Singapore have risen from leadership failures to become examples of what can be achieved with vision and determination. Rwanda’s recovery from genocide to become one of Africa’s fastest-growing economies is a testament to what focused leadership can accomplish. Similarly, Singapore transformed from a poor, resource-scarce nation to a global economic powerhouse through strong, visionary leadership.
The future of a vibrant, self-sufficient Northern Nigeria rests on the shoulders of the young, educated Northerners—those often marginalized by the elite, yet full of potential. It’s time we recognize their value and invest in their leadership. Only then can we truly begin to solve the leadership crisis that holds Nigeria back.
