Like Obasanjo, Gowon expresses support for LND, urges group to embrace nat’l identity
Former Nigeria’s head of state, Gen Yakubu Gowon (Rtd) has extolled the League of Northern Democrats (LND) for coming together to chart a new course for the region.
Gowon made the statement when the LND leadership paid him a courtesy call at his residence.

He thanked the group for its keen interest to ensure the development of the region through unity of purpose and oneness and called on the group to build bridges of unity across the country.
“I’m impressed with the League of Northern Democrats, particularly by the meticulous composition of your membership which clearly represents all shades of interest in the region.
“Honestly I commend your efforts. I think you guys are doing a great job in trying to unite the North and resolve its numerous problems.
“But please try to go beyond the North and make the democratic league national. Whatever is it you have in mind, your ultimate focal point should be Nigeria. We all have to come together and solve Nigeria’s problems,” he said.
