Sultan foundation consolidates ACJL in Adamawa, take awareness to Sunshine motor Park
In it’s resolve to entrench the administration of criminal justice (ACJ) in Adamawa State, the Sultan foundation for peace and development has taken public awareness and enlightenment to Adamawa Sunshine motor park this morning.
The awareness campaign was organized by the Sultan Foundation for Peace and Development with support from the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Programme (RoLAC), a European Union funded program implemented by the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, IDEA.
The Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL) was passed on December 10, 2018 in Adamawa in order to ensure the entrenchment of best practices in the administration of criminal justice in the state.
Commenting on the rationale for the awareness campaign, a resource person, Muneerat Shehu from legal aid council said the major goal of the sensitization is to create awareness around some of the major innovations and provisions of the law towards enhancing it’s operationalization in the state.

She expressed optimism that such awareness will ginger the people to be more proactive in defending their rights.
Amongst the new innovations in the law according to Shehu is the provision that women can serve as sureties, it is unlawful to arrest someone in lieu of the other and non-custodial sentencing.
Others include prevention of torture against suspects during arrest and detention, and bail is free amongst many other novel provisions.
Reacting to the sensitization, a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) Salihu Sani thanked Sultan foundation for the awareness adding that it will go a long way in prodding them to enforce their fundamental rights.
He noted that some of the provisions of like prevention of arrest in lieu, women can stand as sureties and other novel provisions are new to them.
Sani said the new knowledge will enable them to stand stoutly in defense of their rights promising to be good ambassadors of the sultan foundation by stepping down the knowledge to other members of the community.
