LND endorses Mark led coalition as realignments ahead of 2027 thicken
In a bold step toward reshaping Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections, the League of Northern Democrats (LND) has declared its full support for the National Opposition Coalition Group chaired by former Senate President, Senator David Mark.
At a strategic meeting held at the Nicon Luxury Hotel in Abuja on Thursday, May 22, the group—comprising 147 delegates from across the North chaired by Senator Ibrahim Shekarau—adopted a communique endorsing Mark’s initiative as a critical vehicle for national political transition.

The LND resolved that joining forces with the David Mark-led coalition represents a unified response to the urgent need for political realignment and democratic reform.
“We resolved to support the National Opposition Coalition Group chaired by Sen. President David Mark in driving the transitional politics towards the 2027 general elections,” the communique read.
The League’s backing of Senator Mark’s efforts is seen as a significant boost for the coalition, which has been rallying opposition voices around the idea of creating either a new political party or consolidating opposition forces under an existing platform.
In line with this, the LND outlined its preference for registering a new party to accommodate independent-minded politicians from larger, more established parties who are hesitant to join smaller platforms.
“The first option is to register a new party in order to accommodate many independent members who are willing to move out to form a new party,” the LND stated. However, it also left open the possibility of merging into an existing party if necessary.
Beyond coalition-building, the communique also detailed the League’s broader agenda to mobilize Northern political groups, pressure the National Assembly leadership to enforce constitutional provisions, and confront the region’s socio-economic challenges, which it attributed to poor governance at the state and local levels.
