With Babachir on driver’s seat, Adamawa ADC will soon implode — Sen. Girei
A frontline chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Adamawa State, Senator Abubakar Halilu Girei, has taken a swipe at the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Adamawa State warning that with former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir David Lawal, at the helm of affairs, the party is doomed to eternal collapse.
Speaking on the festering internal wrangling within the ADC, Sen. Girei said the opposition party would continue to experience turmoil as long as Lawal remains in control, describing him as a “highly sentimental leader” whose divisive tendencies have become a threat to political cohesion.
“With a person like Babachir in the driver’s seat, the ADC will continue to witness harbingers of woes. Unless the leadership of the party brings him to order, sooner or later the party will cave under completely,” he said.
Girei said no political organization can thrive under leadership that promotes sectional, ethnic, or religious biases. According to him, Babachir Lawal’s antecedents and political history have often reflected narrow interests that contradict the principles of inclusivity and unity essential for running a political party.
“A political party can endure many challenges, financial or organizational but it cannot survive a leader who is openly driven by religious and sectional sentiments. The religious and ethnic biases of Babachir are well documented in our contemporary political journey,” he said.
Girei further argued that the ADC’s problems go beyond poor leadership, noting that many of its members are driven purely by the quest for power rather than service.
“Most of the party’s chieftains are united by their desire for power grab by hook or by crook. That is why infighting and all sorts of underhand tactics have become inevitable, The party will eventually fizzle out under the weight of its self-imposed crisis,” he added.
He lamented that the party’s internal power struggles, accusations, and counter-accusations have already crippled its structure ahead of the 2027 elections.
“Nothing good will come out of this so-called ‘Sabuwar Tafiya’ in Adamawa. The ADC will remain trapped in confusion until after the 2027 polls,” Girei declared.
According to him, the deepening crisis within the ADC reflects a total absence of discipline and respect for democratic norms.
“When party members conspire to circumvent internal democracy just to satisfy their primitive lust for power, the end result can only be chaos and collapse,” he said.
Sen. Girei called on Nigerians to sustain their faith in the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing the president’s leadership as courageous and reform-oriented. He cited notable progress in economic restructuring, inflation control, and national security, saying the president’s policies are beginning to yield positive results.
“The Tinubu-led federal government has achieved so much in revamping the economy, reducing general inflation, and addressing insecurity. Nigerians should maintain a positive outlook because the government is clearly on the right track,” he said.
He also commended the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, for his relentless efforts in tackling insecurity, improving diplomacy, and implementing vital administrative reforms that have enhanced Nigeria’s image and internal stability.
