Adamu Atiku resigns from Fintiri’s cabinet
In a decision that is seen as a strategic statement to align with his father’s political interests, Hon. Adamu Atiku Abubakar has formally resigned from Fintiri’s cabinet as Adamawa State Commissioner for Works and Energy Development.
Adamu’s action followed Fintiri’s action to move to Nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Despite strained relationship with Fintiri which led the Waziri Adamawa to shift to the opposition coalition of ADC, Adamu has remained in Fintiri’s cabinet.
In a letter dated March 2, 2026, and addressed to Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, Adamu formally stepped down from the State Executive Council with immediate effect.
He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and described his tenure as a privilege under the governor’s leadership.
“It has been a rare honour and privilege to serve under your visionary leadership and to contribute, in my modest capacity, to the infrastructural growth and development of our dear state,” he wrote.
The resignation, however, comes amid significant political shifts within the Atiku political family structure.
Adamu’s decision follows recent developments involving Abba Atiku Abubakar, who reportedly aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a move that altered long-standing political equations in Adamawa State.
Sources familiar with the situation suggest that Adamu’s resignation is tied to efforts to harmonize political positions within the family and reposition it ahead of the 2027 general elections.
While no formal declaration of defection has been made, insiders describe the development as a strategic consolidation rather than a spontaneous withdrawal from office.
Adamu thanked governor Fintiri and the people of Adamawa State for the love and support they accorded to him leading to his success in the ministry of works and energy development.
“I remain profoundly grateful for the confidence and trust Your Excellency reposed in me throughout my tenure,” he stated, while also offering prayers for the governor’s continued success.
Political analysts say the move underscores the growing realignments taking shape across party lines in Adamawa, particularly as key political actors reassess alliances in anticipation of 2027.
The state, considered politically strategic in the North-East, has recently witnessed a series of shifts involving senior political figures.
Although neither Adamu nor his associates have publicly announced their next political step, the timing of his resignation has fueled speculation that he may align more closely with his father’s political aspirations despite remaining in the government in the light of strained relationship with his father.
