World Bank L-PRES trains 100 in livestock care in Bauchi

In a bid to enhance good animal husbandry practices in Bauchi State, 100 community livestock service providers are undergoing training under the World Bank-assisted “Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project.”
This training focuses on improving husbandry practices, particularly in dairy, cattle, sheep, and goat management and production.

The primary objective of the training is to equip community livestock service providers with the necessary knowledge and skills to promote and support good animal husbandry practices among small holder farmers.
Additionally, the capacity-building training aims to enhance animal production welfare, health, and overall livestock production in Bauchi State.
During the workshop’s opening on Thursday, January 16, 2025, the Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Agriculture, Mallam Ibrahim Yusha’u Isah, emphasized the direct impact of the training on communities, local government areas (LGAs), and the state’s livestock sector.
He encouraged participants to seize the opportunity and share ideas to improve service delivery in their respective communities.
“Agriculture, as one of the key components of His Excellency, Governor Bala Mohammed’s ‘My Bauchi Project Agenda,’ is not just about food production; it is about ensuring that our food systems are resilient, safe, and sustainable,” said Mallam Isah.
He also expressed gratitude to Governor Bala Mohammed for his continuous support in developing the agricultural sector in Bauchi State.
Mallam Isah highlighted that the Ministry of Agriculture, through L-PRES, has trained 50 artificial insemination service providers at NAPRI Zaria.
He stressed the importance of the governor’s support for effective service delivery and urged participants to be good ambassadors of their LGAs by conducting step-down training in their respective areas.
In his welcome address, the State Project Coordinator of L-PRES, Musa Adamu One, outlined the project’s various activities, including training on One Health for veterinary, para-vets, health, and environmental workers; training of extension agents across the state; and the donation of 4,000 doses of anthrax spore vaccine for livestock vaccination.
Adamu One further revealed that the L-PRES Project has trained 50 service providers on artificial insemination at the National Animal Production Research Institute (NAPRI) in Shika, Zaria, and trained women pastoralists on milk hygiene and collection protocols.
Additionally, 100 livestock farmers have been trained on using crop residue as livestock feed.
The coordinator highlighted the project’s five components, structured around three interrelated areas: strengthening national institutions for improving the enabling environment and service delivery, value chain enhancement, and crisis prevention and conflict mitigation, peacebuilding, and project coordination.
He emphasised that the expected outcomes of the training include improved livestock productivity, increased quality and quantity of livestock products, community-based livestock service delivery, and strengthened animal disease prevention.
“On this note, I urge you to pay attention and make a meaningful contribution towards the success of the project in the state,” said the coordinator.
