Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has on Monday berated president Muhammadu Buhari and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) accusing them of staging a coup against democracy following the failure of the president to assent to the electoral bill.
One of the contentious issues in the electoral bill which seeks to provide electoral reforms is the provision that stipulates all political parties to adopt direct primaries to open up the democratic space and to enhance transparency in leadership recruitment process.
The national assembly has on November 19, sent the electoral bill to president Muhammadu Buhari for assent. The president refused to assent the bill saying that it will cause chaos, confusion and is expensive to implement among other reasons.
But expressing anger over the development, Fintiri, who made the accusation while receiving members of APC including a house of assembly member who decamped to PDP in Mubi South LG of the state, said, the action was informed by the innate fear by APC of losing 2023 election at all levels.
“We are not surprised by the action of Buhari and APC because of the level of decadence that this government, particularly the federal government, has brought into our system destruction of our economy, destruction in infrastructures, security and youth development.
” They are ganging up to destroy our democracy by encouraging the President not to assent to the electoral bills because they are afraid of 2023,” he said.
He charged Nigerians to come together to stop the conspiracy of some stalwart of the APC who are scheming to destroy the country’s democracy and development.
“We have to come together as people to fight and rescue our democracy because it is the only way out,” he said.
The governor also flagged off 6.4 kilometer road in Mubi, which would decongest the traffic jam that usually occur on the road on daily basis.
The State Chairman of the PDP, Mr. Tahir Shehu, in his remark at the event said that the governor has made it easier for the party to campaign and bring more people into the party due to his infrastructural development in the state.
Shehu said that the governors works would speaks for him come 2023 general elections.
