APC Diaspora Urges Tinubu’s Support for Diaspora Voting Bill
The All Progressives Congress (APC) Committee of Diaspora Chairmen has reached out to President Bola Tinubu, seeking his backing for the Diaspora Voting Bill currently before the National Assembly. The committee, in a statement released on Tuesday in Osogbo, expressed concerns that the bill had previously been voted against due to apparent lack of interest from the presidency. It highlighted the importance of Tinubu’s support, given his own experiences abroad, and called on him to champion the cause of Nigerian citizens living outside the country’s borders.
Prof. Adesegun Labinjo and Mr. Bola Babarinde, Chairman and General Secretary of the committee respectively, jointly signed the statement. They acknowledged Prince Ade Omole of APC UK for spearheading the bill, with support from Labinjo and Babarinde representing the U.S. and South African chapters, respectively. The committee emphasized that Nigerians in the diaspora, with their extensive experience in advanced economies worldwide, were eager to contribute their expertise and advice to the success of Tinubu’s administration.
“We firmly believe that with President Tinubu and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, who have both resided in the diaspora, the goal of implementing diaspora voting will be easier to achieve this time around,” the committee stated. “We implore these two patriotic Nigerians, appointed to key positions, to utilize their offices in championing the cause of Nigerian citizens residing outside our great nation. By encouraging and supporting us, we can offer significant value to this administration as partners in progress.”
The committee expressed its commitment to ensuring that President Tinubu fulfills his campaign promises and commended the appointment of Sen. George Akume as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. Recognizing Akume’s extensive experience as a former minister and governor, the committee believed that he would bring valuable insights to his new role. Additionally, the committee congratulated Femi Gbajabiamila on his appointment as the Chief of Staff to the President, noting his distinguished service as the Majority Leader of the House of Representatives and subsequently as the Speaker.
Highlighting Gbajabiamila’s supportive stance towards Nigerians in the diaspora, particularly through his engagement with the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) and his advocacy for the Diaspora Voting Bill, the committee praised his leadership style. It attributed the increased harmony between the executive and legislative arms of government, especially regarding the passing of bills that promote nation-building, to Gbajabiamila’s effective leadership.
Describing Gbajabiamila and Akume as experienced and resourceful individuals, the committee emphasized their capacity to assist President Tinubu in steering the country toward greatness, aligning with the vision outlined in the Renewed Hope agenda. “Your appointments symbolize the beginning of a new era for our great nation, as promised by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” the committee affirmed. “Your prior experiences as federal legislators and accomplished national politicians demonstrate that you are perfectly suited for these roles.”
By seeking Tinubu’s support and acknowledging the contributions of Akume and Gbajabiamila, the APC Committee of Diaspora Chairmen aims to garner influential backing for the Diaspora Voting Bill.
