Absence of FG’s counsel delays trial of ‘Terrorist Negotiator’ Tukur Mamu
The trial commencement of Tukur Mamu, who is accused of having ties with terrorists involved in an attack on a Kaduna-bound train last year, was stalled due to the absence of counsel for the Federal Government.
The trial was scheduled before Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja. Mamu’s counsel informed the court that the prosecuting counsel was unavailable due to training, leading to an adjournment of the trial to July 19.
Tukur Mamu, a former negotiator with terrorists, was arraigned on March 21 by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation on ten counts related to terrorism financing, particularly in connection with the recent Abuja-Kaduna train attack.
During the proceedings, Mamu pleaded not guilty to the charges. On April 27, the court denied his bail application, citing his failure to refute the claims made in the counter-affidavit filed by the Department of State Services (DSS), the agency detaining him.

He is accused of receiving various amounts of money in different currencies from the families of the victims of the train attack.
The collected funds reportedly amounted to $420,000, along with an additional N21 million from other affected families.
Furthermore, Mamu is accused of concealing these terrorism funds in his residence in Kaduna, which violates the provisions of the Terrorism Prevention, Prohibition Act. However, Mamu has steadfastly denied all the charges brought against him.

Mamu’s defense lawyer, Obiabo Francis-Amedo, notified the court about the situation and revealed that the prosecution had proposed a date before the vacation period.
Consequently, Justice Ekwo scheduled the trial to resume on July 19. The adjournment being at the prosecution’s request indicates that both sides need ample time to prepare and present their arguments in what is undoubtedly a high-profile case involving terrorism-related charges.
