Davido was target of Osun convoy attack – Police

The Osun State Police Command has disclosed that the recent attack involving the convoy of Governor Ademola Adeleke in Osogbo was allegedly targeted at Nigerian music star, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido.
The incident occurred on Wednesday when the governor visited the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo shortly after collecting his certificate of return from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following his victory in the recently concluded governorship election.

Davido, who actively participated in his uncle’s election campaign, reportedly accompanied the governor to the INEC office and later to the monarch’s palace.
The incident reportedly triggered panic in the Oja Oba area of Osogbo as unidentified men engaged the governor’s security personnel in a gun duel that lasted several minutes.
Residents said sporadic gunshots sent people scampering for safety as security operatives attached to the governor’s convoy responded to the attackers.
However, the police later said preliminary investigations indicated that the confrontation was linked to an alleged attempt by suspected members of the Eye Confraternity to gain access to Davido.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, identified one Adebayo Taoreed, popularly known as “Small Rugged”, as an alleged former convict, suspected thug and member of the Eye Confraternity who attempted to approach Davido but was reportedly stopped by members of the musician’s security team.
According to the police, the confrontation subsequently attracted other suspected gang members in the area, who allegedly blocked the entrance to the palace and temporarily disrupted the movement of the governor’s convoy.
The situation later escalated, with the suspected gang members reportedly leaving the area and allegedly shooting a 60-year-old man, Tajudeen Yusuf, at Itaolokan area of Osogbo.
Ojelabi said the victim was found critically injured in a pool of blood after the police received information about the shooting.
He was immediately evacuated to the University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, for medical attention but was pronounced dead by doctors on duty.
The police spokesperson said the command had commenced a full-scale investigation aimed at identifying the suspects involved in the violence, tracking down those who fled the scene and bringing them to justice.
The Commissioner of Police in charge of the election in Osun State, CP Samuel Etaifo, condemned the incident, describing it as a serious criminal act that would not be allowed to go unpunished.
Etaifo assured residents that the command would deploy all available resources to apprehend those responsible for the shooting and restore confidence in public safety.
The police also appealed to members of the public with relevant information that could assist the investigation to approach the nearest police station or contact the command through its official communication channels.
The command urged residents to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands, assuring the public that further information would be released as the investigation progresses.
The incident has renewed concerns over security during high-profile political movements in the state, particularly following the conclusion of the Osun governorship election and the heightened political activities surrounding the outcome.
