Adamawa unveils new ‘human papilloma virus vaccine’ to tackle cervical cancer

In its desire to reduce rampant cases of deaths as a result of Cervical Cancer, Adamawa State government has unveiled a new vaccine known as “Human Papilloma Virus Vaccine” which administration will commence from 25th September 2023.

The Chairman Adamawa State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr Suleiman Sa’idu Bashir disclosed this Tuesday to newsmen in Yola during interactive session with other partners.

Dr Suleiman Bashir stated that Cervical Cancer is the commonest Cancer in women and is a major cause of death amongst women.

According to him, “although Cancer has no cure, it can however be prevented if timely action is taken”.

He explained that “Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is the main causative agent for cervical cancer, stressing that vaccine against HPV is available and it is the most cost effective means of prevention of cervical cancer”.

“HPV vaccination if given before exposure of the virus to girls aged between 9 to 14 years, it will offer the maximum protection while women older than 14 years will require screening before their vaccination”, he said.

Dr Suleiman Bashir further explained that the HPV vaccination will commence in the State from 25th to 29th September 2023 at some strategic sites in the communities as well as in all the public health facilities offering routine immunization.

While appealing to parents to release their children, he however maintained that they should visit the nearest vaccination site to get their children and wards vaccinated, adding that the vaccine is free, safe and effective .

In his goodwill massage, a representative of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr Adamu Bello said the vaccine will go a long way to prevent young ladies from contacting Cervical Cancer.

He applauded the efforts of the State Government and the Adamawa State Primary Health Care Development Agency for their commitments to ensuring that the exercise is implemented as planned.
