Leading his defense team was Joseph Daudu, a prominent Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

Emefiele pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him. His defense counsel highlighted the prolonged detention of their client and informed the court that an application for bail had been submitted and served on the prosecution.

Godwin Emefiele was suspended as the CBN governor on June 9, 2023, by President Bola Tinubu.

The following day, the DSS confirmed that Emefiele was in their custody. Subsequently, an Abuja High Court issued an order on July 13, 2023, mandating the DSS to charge Emefiele in court within a week or release him.

In response, the DSS complied and brought the former CBN governor before the Federal High Court in Lagos.

The Federal Government presented two counts of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition against Emefiele.

The charge sheet accused him of possessing a single-barrel shotgun (JOJEFF MAGNUM 8371) without a valid license, a violation of Section 4 of the Firearms Act, Cap F28 Laws of the Federation 2004, and punishable under Section 27 (1b) of the same Act.

Additionally, Emefiele was charged with possessing 123 rounds of live ammunition (cartridges) without the necessary license, contravening Section 8 of the Firearms Act Cap F28 Laws of the Federation 2004 and punishable under Section 27 (1)(b)(il) of the same Act.

Emefiele’s defense counsel sought to have him admitted to bail on self-recognition. However, the court has yet to rule on this matter, leaving the fate of the former CBN governor hanging in the balance.

The arraignment of Godwin Emefiele, the suspended CBN Governor, on charges of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, has sparked a nationwide debate.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the public remains eager for justice and the truth behind the allegations against him.

The future of one of Nigeria’s highest-ranking financial officials hangs in the balance as the court’s decision on bail awaits, and the nation watches closely for the outcome of this high-profile case.
