On Tuesday, the Kaduna State House of Assembly suspended three local government chairmen, Kaura, Kagarko, and Chikun, due to accusations of financial mismanagement.

These chairmen were alleged to have awarded contracts without adhering to the stipulations outlined in the Kaduna State Public Procurement Law of 2016, Section 35 Subsection 23.

The assembly’s decision to suspend the chairmen stemmed from a resolution passed on July 18, 2023.

The assembly appointed Munirat Sulaiman Tanimu, representing Lere East, to serve as an ad-hoc committee chairman tasked with investigating the financial activities of five local government areas, which include Chikun, Kaura, Kagarko, Soba, and Birnin Gwari.

The ad-hoc committee, under the leadership of Munirat Sulaiman Tanimu, conducted a thorough investigation into the financial activities of the mentioned local government areas.

The committee invited the three affected chairmen to submit essential financial documents, such as bank statements from June 2022 to June 2023, departmental vault account (DVA) records, approved budgets for 2022 and 2023, and details of awarded contracts along with their levels of completion.

After a comprehensive review of the submitted documents, the committee found that the chairmen of Kaura, Kagarko, and Chikun had violated Section 48 of the Local Government Administration Law of 2018 and Section 35 Subsection 25 of the Kaduna State Public Procurement Law of 2016.

These sections relate to compliance with budget allocations and the state’s public procurement regulations.

Based on the committee’s findings, it recommended a six-month suspension for the three chairmen, pending further investigation.

During this period, the chairmen are not allowed to be present at their respective local government secretariats and must hand over their responsibilities to their respective vice chairmen.

The suspension is a significant step taken by the Kaduna State Assembly to address allegations of financial misappropriation and ensure accountability in local government administrations.

The assembly’s commitment to enforcing relevant laws and regulations is a crucial aspect of promoting transparency and good governance in the state, a political analyst, Musa Muhammed said.

“The suspension of the three local government chairmen in Kaduna State demonstrates the government’s resolve to tackle financial mismanagement and uphold public procurement laws.

“The ongoing investigation signifies the authorities’ dedication to maintaining accountability and good governance in the state’s local administrations,” another commentator, Philip Don said.
