Coup: Mali, Burkina Faso brace for mother of all wars over attack on Niger
In a show of solidarity, Burkina Faso and Mali jointly conveyed a strong warning against military intervention in coup-hit Niger.
The two West African countries, both governed by military-backed regimes, issued a joint statement denouncing the threat made by West African leaders, calling it a potential catalyst for war in the region.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), during an emergency meeting in Abuja, Nigeria, chaired by President Bola Tinubu, threatened military action against Niger’s junta if President Mohamed Bazoum was not reinstated within seven days.

The junta had detained President Bazoum, and ECOWAS aimed to exert pressure on the coup leaders to release him or face sanctions.
Fueled by the perceived interference in their sovereign affairs, Mali and Burkina Faso lashed out at ECOWAS’ ultimatum. The two nations stood firmly with the people of Niger, acknowledging their right to shape their own destiny independently.
They warned that any military intervention against Niger would be seen as a direct declaration of war against Burkina Faso and Mali, raising the stakes in the ongoing political turmoil.
The coup leaders in Niger installed General Abdourahamane Tchiani, former chief of the presidential guard, as the new Head of State, citing concerns over President Bazoum’s governance and his handling of security threats posed by groups affiliated with al-Qaeda and ISIS.
