Niger shuns ECOWAS members, opens borders with 5 countries
The Niger Republic’s military junta recently reopened the country’s land borders and airspace, just one week after the removal of President Mohamed Bazoum from office.

The announcement, made on Tuesday night by the military junta, revealed that the borders are now open to Mali, Burkina Faso, Algeria, Libya, and Chad.
In response to the coup, Mali and Burkina Faso, both ECOWAS members and currently under military rule, aligned themselves with the coup leaders in Niger.

The military leaders warned ECOWAS against further interventions that might disrupt the spirit of Pan-Africanism.

They asserted their readiness to take “self-defense measures” to support Niger’s armed forces and people if any military intervention against the country occurs.
Tensions persist between Niger and other ECOWAS members, leading to the continued closure of borders with Benin and Nigeria.
President Bola Tinubu, the ECOWAS chairperson, expressed strong condemnation of the coup, pledging to pursue peaceful resolutions and the restoration of democracy in the unstable West African country and the broader region.
Following the coup, ECOWAS sent President Patrice Talon of Benin to Niger to assess the situation, and they issued an ultimatum to the coup leaders on Sunday, demanding the release and reinstatement of the democratically elected President Bazoum.
If their demands are not met within a week, ECOWAS warned of strict measures, including the use of force.
In response to the crisis, several foreign countries, including France and Italy, have started evacuating their citizens and other nationals from Niger.
Moreover, the United States, Germany, and the European Union (EU) have suspended financial support to the country in protest against the coup.
However, the military junta has remained resilient, dismissing calls and sanctions aimed at restoring President Bazoum to power.
The situation remains under intense scrutiny as ECOWAS members began a three-day meeting in Nigeria to discuss potential solutions moving forward.”
