Four-day SBC strategy dev workshop kicks off in Adamawa
A four-day strategy development workshop for Social and Behavioral Change (SBC) has kicked off in Yola, the capital of Adamawa State on Tuesday.
The four day workshop was organized by The Challenge Initiative (TCI) in response to the need for a change in behavior of the people towards some myths, inhibitions and misconceptions in accessing healthcare services around some thematic areas.

The areas include; family planning, Nutrition, immunization, HIV/AIDS, Health Promotion, Adolescence and Youth Sexual Reproduction Health (AYSRH) and RH in Adamawa State.

The objectives of the four day training include; identifying gaps in SBC programming in the state, developing a strategy document for SBC intervention in the state and to utilize the document to ensure effective change of behavior of persons in the putative areas.

In her opening remark, Rashida Tahir, Director, Community Health Services, Adamawa State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (ADSHCDA) said the importance of the workshop cannot be overemphasized as it is aimed to identify gaps and lapses due to behaviors of people that always impinge negatively on healthcare delivery.

She also noted that the four day exercise will lead to the birth of a strategy document that will ensure change of behavior of persons adding that the document will be handy in view of the fact that the state currently does not have any such document in place.
She urged the participants to work hard in coming with a well thought out document in view of the importance and relevance of the document in improving healthcare delivery in the state
Also in her presentation, Saadatu Yakubu, Demand Generation Technical Support Lead of The Challenge Initiative, enumerated some key challenges afflicting the various thematic areas.
She identified some of the key challenges in the AYSRH to include minimal youth friendly services, low community engagement, misconceptions etc. She also identified challenges in the nutrition sector to include; poor supplementary feeding, low breastfeeding practice and low spousal support.
According to her, the challenges afflicting family planning include; undesired side effects, low spousal communication, low male involvement, myths and misconceptions and user fee just as she identified challenges in HIV/AIDS to include stigma and poverty.
She also identified self medication, low use of mosquito nets, low adherence by pregnant women, as the challenges bedeviling the malaria sector just as she identified low stakeholder engagement, service provider attitude, self medication traditional herbs and rumour/myths/misconception as issues afflicting health promotion.
Earlier in their respective presentations, the heads of the various sectors corroborated the challenges as enumerated by Saadatu Yakubu.
During the group work on the various themes, some of the critical challenges bedeviling the sectors were highlighted which will be used in developing the SBC strategy document.
