Adamawa politician, Ahmed Lawal seeks review of oath of office

A prominent Adamawa based politician and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stalwart, Mr. Ahmed Lawal has called on the national assembly to review the oath of office in order to expunge some “thorny and stringent” sections in it.

In an interview with our reporter, the politician who expressed discomfort with the portion which said “I will not allow my personal interest to interfere with my official assignment” added that the statement is problematic considering the innate human frailties and weaknesses.

He opined that the law should be made flexible noting that although he has no ulterior motives behind his call, the weaknesses of a human being may sometimes expose him to make involuntary mistakes which may in one way or the other affect his Oath of office adding that a man’s conscience should always be his best compass.

He noted that despite the existence of the oath of office, political office holders still find ways to shortchange the system adding that the leadership recruitment process which hatches bad leaders should rather be supplanted.

“I feel the above phrase is too rigid in democratic system of government. My take here is on the national assembly to review the section.

“Firstly, the wordings have the vestiges of military mentality of rigidity as opposed to moderation which is the hallmark of democracy. But democracy should be able to address these concerns in consideration of the human frailties and weaknesses.

“I wish our indefatigable lawmakers will take cognizance of this very fundamental issue and address it as soon as possible,” Lawal said.
