West African surgeons extoll MAUTH Yola, accredit Opthalmology dept
The West African College of Surgeons, WACS, visited Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital for the purpose of accreditation of Ophthalmology – a branch of medical science dealing with the structure, functions, and diseases of the eye.
The WACS, represented by Ophthalmologiss, Prof J.F.A Owoeye from University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital Kwara state, Dr E. Achigbu from Federal Teaching Hospital Owerri, Imo State and Dr M.D Adamu from Usman Danfodio University Teaching Hospital Sokoto was conducted round the health facility by the Deputy Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (DCMAC) Education and Training, Dr Dahiru Ridadu and the Head of Ophthalmology Department Dr Mustapha Tajudeen.

The team also visited the Ophthalmology Department of the State Specialist Hospital Yola and General Hospital Jada being utilised as an outpost station in partial fulfillment for the residency training, where they expressed satisfaction with the facilities and services rendered.
Presenting the panel’s results of assessment to the management of the hospital, Professor Owoeye commended the manpower, facility and services, which the panel considered as sufficient enough to qualify the hospital gain residency training in Ophthalmology, adding that though still a baby, MAUTH Yola has been able to do more than it is obtained in some older health facilities.
The team has also earlier acknowledged the reception support and cooperation they enjoyed that accorded them a free hand, non interference in their assessment considered as being objective.
The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Prof Adamu Bakari Girei thanked the panel members for their objective assessment and encouraging remarks, assuring that the hospital management would promptly address areas identified requiring upgrading.
The DCMAC and the HOD Ophthalmology expressed their happiness and satisfaction with the accreditation exercise that is considered an additional achievement not only to the development but also to the hospital.
The Ophthalmology department marks World Glaucoma Day yearly for close to a decade, to sensitise the public on prevention, to test for Glaucoma and to carry out free treatment, in addition to providing reading glasses for the optically impaired.
The hospital community, state health services management board, media organisations, the mighty NUJ, markets and motor parks have separately benefitted from the sensitization on prevention, free screening for Glaucoma and treatment.
