ASELGON convenes retreat, to appraise LG autonomy, others
National President of the Association of Ex-Local Government Chairmen of Nigeria (ASELGON), Hon. Albert Asipa has disclosed that appraisal of the association’s past events, local government autonomy and security matters in the country would top the agenda of the National Retreat tagged “EKO AKETE ’24” being planned by the association.
Hon. Asipa, who stated this at the inauguration of the Retreat Organizing Committee in Abuja however lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his unrelenting efforts to ensure that local government is free by the setting up of a Committee led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation as a follow up to the judgment delivered by the Supreme Court.

Stressing the pivotal roles of the local government in the overall growth and development of any federation, the ASELGON boss maintained that the result of the efforts by Mr. President in that direction would be awesome in due course as he also praised the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) for its consistency.
While inaugurating the Organizing Committee of the national retreat under the Chairmanship of Hon. Kamal Bayeiwu, the President charged the committee to give the association one of the best evergreen gatherings that would last for decades in the memory of the association.
Hon. Asipa, who disclosed that the Chairman and other Committee members were carefully chosen based on their competencies and credibility assured them that the National Secretariat of the Association would give them all the necessary support to carry out the assignment.
He used the opportunity to inform the members of the association of the task ahead and the need to buckle up, noting that “the target of the present leadership of the association is to raise our membership to 10,000 come next year, a task that is very simple, because, hardly would you get to a local government in Nigeria without counting at least 10 former local government Chairmen. Eko Akete ’24 would be the launching pad”.
Responding on behalf of the committee,
the Chairman, who is also the Chairman of the Lagos State Local Government Service Commission, Hon. Kamal Bayeiwu appreciated the association for the choice of Lagos State, the “Centre of Excellence” as the host of the Retreat.
While promising that the committee would not disappoint the association, he said the choice of Lagos State as the host would gladden the heart of the Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, whom he described as grassroots man and local government administrators friendly and the only Governor that was giving local government direct allocation before the advent of Supreme Court judgement.
