Adamawa govt dismisses reported cholera outbreak
• Says cases of acute watery diarrhea so far recorded
Adamawa State government has dismissed reported cholera outbreak in the state noting that the state has witnessed acute watery diarrhea whose causative agent is still under investigation.
Making the clarification during a press conference in Yola, Adamawa State capital, the commissioner of health and human services, Hon. Felix Tangwami said so far the state has recorded 117 cases with seven fatalities from the epidemic.

The clarification came on the heels of media reports indicating that the state is witnessing cholera outbreak resulting in several deaths.
Tangwami noted that the state government is not resting on its oars in tackling the epidemic adding that all necessary measures including taking samples from patients to the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) has been effected. He said that it is only when laboratory tests has proven that the acute watery diarrhea is caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholera that cholera outbreak will be established in the state.
Tangwami added that in the wake of the epidemic, the state government has deployed additional nurses and final year students of college of nursing and midwifery to manage the situation adding that so far the result of the laboratory tests is being awaited.
“When there is outbreak of epidemic, there is a procedure we always followed because you cannot just come to the conclusion without a laboratory test. Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) was done at the infectious disease center at the specialist hospital.
“Some of the samples were taken for culture at the NCDC so that we will know the causative organism. Of course when there are outbreaks that are similar to familiar epidemics, we must conduct tests.
“In rainy seasons, we often encounter acute watery diarrhea for taking contaminated food and water. We had conducted emergency meeting of the operation center on Sunday.
“There were reports that people are saying that we don’t want to give information on the epidemic. Every person was given treatment, some were discharged, some were treated. So far only one death was recorded at the hospital while other deaths were recorded in the communities due to poor handling of the epidemic,” he said.
