Garga foundation and Adamawa Concerned Women In Politics (ACWIP) with support from International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), USAID and UKAID have organized a one day training to build the capacity of newly elected vice chairmen on effective local government administration.

The training was a response to the need for the 21 vice chairmen of LGs in Adamawa who are all women to have a grasp of leadership and administration.

Speaking during the occasion, Rukayya Aminu Muhammad, Garga foundation’s
Program Manager, said the foundation has long been committed to empowering women and communities through education, leadership development, and capacity building.

“This training program aligns with our core mission to strengthen women rights, women participation in politics and democratic governance, and we are thrilled to see the participation of our vice chairs from across all the 21 local government areas of Adamawa State.

“Your dedication to advancing effective leadership at the grassroots level is not only commendable but essential to driving sustainable development and positive change in your local government areas.

“Garga Foundation, would like to specially thank His Excellency, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, who has been a true champion of women’s empowerment, who has consistently been supporting NGOs and their advocacy efforts towards gender equality in leadership across Adamawa State.

“His Excellency’s remarkable support in the campaigns and election of women as Vice-Chairs in all the 21 Local Government Areas. This extraordinary effort stands as a groundbreaking achievement, not only in Nigeria but across the African continent.

“Today’s workshop is an opportunity for all of us to engage, learn, and grow together.

“Local government administration plays a critical role in shaping the future of Adamawa State and your efforts as vice-chairs are important in ensuring good governance, transparency, accountability
and community engagement. Garga Foundation, hopes that through the sessions today, you will all gain additional knowledge, strengthen your leadership skills, and further develop strategies for more inclusive and effective governance at your local government areas.

“Garga Foundation is grateful to International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) for 100% supporting this event and we are committed to continue seeking for funds to support Adamawa Concerned Women in Politics and other NGOs to continue working together to build stronger, inclusive and more vibrant communities in Adamawa State,” she said.

Also speaking Hon. Kate Mamuno, majority leader of Adamawa State house of assembly urged the beneficiaries to pay attention during the sessions so that they could maximally be impacted.

She disclosed that she is currently working on a bill for a law to ensure that women serve as deputy governors expressing optimism that when passed the law will be assented to by the governor who is renowned for his gender sensitivity.

Mamuno observed that the current deputy governor of Adamawa and the state chief judge are all shinning examples of the resilience and can do spirit of Adamawa women because since they came to office their performance was above expectations.

She expressed her readiness to collaborate with Garga foundation and Adamawa Concerned Women In Politics to strengthen advocacies for the election of women into the state house of assembly especially in local governments that are less gender sensitive.

Also speaking, the president of ACWIP,
Zainab Abubakar said the training is a right step in the right direction as it will sharpen the skills of the newly elected vice chairmen in leadership and administration.

She noted that the training is a step forward in bridging the gap in leadership and administration adding that despite the resilience and commitment of Adamawa women, they are sidelined in politics and governance in the state.

Adamawa Women are bold and resilient but they are sidelined. A new narrative is being set today. Garga foundation is making giant strides to ensure the incorporation of women who are forbears of good governance and champions of accountability into the system.

In his goodwill message, Seray Jah, country Director of IFES used the occasion to congratulate the newly elected vice chairmen.

He urged them to pay attention as the training will play crucial role in their success as administrators. He also appreciated governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri for his contributions towards the proliferation of women in politics and governance adding that Adamawa State has carved a niche for itself.

Jah urged the vice chairmen to be good ambassadors of women noting that with leadership comes a huge responsibility just as he congratulate Garga foundation for its roles in sensitizing and empowering women in the state.
