Int’l Anti-corruption day: Adamawa HoS calls for bottom-top approach in tackling menace
Adamawa State Head of Civil Service, Pharm Isa Shehu Ardo has called for a change of strategy in tackling the menace of corruption in the country.
Ardo who made the appeal during a high-level seminar in commemoration of the international anti-corruption day in Adamawa called for a bottom-up approach targeting young adults and secondary school students as the new vanguards of the anti-corruption crusade.
The event, themed “Uniting with Youth Against Corruption: Shaping Tomorrow’s Integrity,” was organized under the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC) programme, funded by the European Union and implemented by International IDEA.

International anti-corruption day is observed annually in December to raise public awareness about the havoc of the corruption and to proffer best practices in addressing it.
Despite Nigeria’s acclaimed efforts in tackling the menace, the country’s corruption rating has remained high which is mainly responsible for the country’s underdevelopment.
The head of service urged the Anti-Corruption Secretariat to extend its outreach to secondary schools to “catch them young” and nurture a culture of integrity.
Additionally, he called on Permanent Secretaries to empower Anti-Corruption Units in Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to promote transparency and accountability in public administration.
Discussions on the Implementation of the Adamawa State Anti-Corruption Strategy (ADSACS) which was facilitated by RoLAC coordinator in Adamawa State, Barr Hapsat Abdullahi featured prominently during the event.
Abdullahi urged targeted advocacy and strategic partnerships with civil society groups to sustain the fight against corruption.
The sessions reviewed the progress and challenges being faced by ADSACS and charted ways forward in order to ensure the sustainability and improvement of anti-corruption strategies.
In their various contributions, stakeholders commended RoLAC for its tireless efforts in nipping the debilitating scourge in the bus.
In his submission, a participant, Mr. Amos Sunday commended the initiative and emphasized the importance of creating stricter laws to deter corruption.
Aishatu Yakubu, Chairperson of a leading NGO in Adamawa State, called for collective efforts to tackle corruption, describing it as a menace requiring decisive action.
Also contributing, representatives of various organizations, including the International Press Centre, legal practitioners, and local NGOs, highlighted the need for continuous advocacy and community engagement to combat corruption effectively. The participants called for stronger enforcement of anti-corruption laws and innovative approaches to promote integrity.
The event concluded with a commitment to further anti-corruption efforts and the adoption of actionable steps to strengthen the Adamawa State Anti-Corruption Strategy.
