Wike to opposition: Don’t turn blind eye to Tinubu’s achievements

By Mohammed Ismail

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has challenged opposition politicians to rise above partisan sentiments and acknowledge the sterling achievements of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Wike argued that political differences should not prevent opposition leaders from recognising government policies and initiatives they consider beneficial to the country.

The minister spoke on Wednesday, October 14, during the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council in Abuja, where political leaders, governors and other stakeholders gathered to strategise ahead of the forthcoming electoral contest.

Despite his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Wike reaffirmed his support for Tinubu, insisting that party affiliation should not be a barrier against supporting policies that promote national development.

The former Rivers State governor dismissed criticisms portraying the Tinubu administration as directionless, arguing that the President had demonstrated the political will to confront difficult national challenges that successive administrations had struggled to resolve.

He maintained that political disagreements should not become an excuse for disregarding government actions simply because they emanated from a rival political platform.

On security, Wike expressed confidence in the administration’s capacity to tackle the country’s security challenges, pointing to the proposed establishment of state police as one of the reforms that could strengthen the nation’s security architecture.

The debate over state policing has remained a major national issue, with proponents advocating decentralised security operations while concerns persist over constitutional safeguards, funding, accountability and the potential for abuse by state authorities.

Wike also charged members of the Presidential Campaign Council to justify their appointments by delivering tangible results in their respective areas of influence.

He urged the council members not to rely on the prestige of their positions but to demonstrate their political relevance through measurable achievements and effective engagement with the electorate.

A review of the inauguration proceedings by the Media and Publicity Team of the Forum of Chief Executives of Federal Parastatals (FORCEPA) identified Wike’s intervention as one of the notable contributions to the event.

The inauguration brought together political figures from different backgrounds, including Anambra State Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo and Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, underscoring the gathering’s cross-party political dimension.

The FORCEPA Media and Publicity Team said the event provided an opportunity to examine issues surrounding governance, public accountability, security reforms and the relationship between political competition and national development.

The forum maintained that assessments of government performance should be based on verifiable policies, measurable outcomes and the lived experiences of Nigerians across different sectors, rather than partisan narratives.

It stressed that constructive political engagement requires stakeholders to scrutinise government decisions objectively, acknowledge demonstrable progress where it exists and hold public officials accountable where expectations have not been met.
