During the launch of his book titled “The Putin Files: Excursions Around The Ideology Of Pain,” Prof Wole Soyinka expressed his views on the role played by the Obidient Movement in the recently concluded 2023 general election.

Soyinka’s comments were in response to a question raised by lawyer and poet Ogaga Ifowodo, who sought clarification on his previous statement referring to the Obidients as fascists.

Soyinka cited the EndSARS protest as an example of a movement driven by truth which he said was in sharp contrast with the Obidient Movement and actions.
Soyinka commended the EndSARS protest as one of the most successful movements in Nigeria’s history. He expressed his support for the protest and recalled addressing some of the protesters before departing from Lagos to Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State.
Comparing the EndSARS protest to the Obidient Movement, Soyinka noted that the latter aimed to mobilize young people in defense of untruths.
The acclaimed writer drew parallels between the actions of the Obidient Movement and former President Muhammadu Buhari’s alleged incitement of violence against innocent members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
Soyinka suggested that Buhari’s claims of election fraud led to the tragic loss of lives. He argued that even before the election, some individuals had conspired to destabilize the country and establish an interim government.
Soyinka further criticized those who supported this cause, asserting that they were unwittingly playing into the hands of external forces and acting foolishly.
It is important to note that in May, the Obidient Movement voiced their objections to Soyinka’s characterization of them as fascists. Their response highlighted a disagreement between the movement and the esteemed author, which has become a subject of public debate.
