Yola South APC suffers setback as former acting chairman, Umar Barkindo, defects to APM

A former acting Chairman of Yola South Local Government Area and retired Permanent Secretary, Umar Barkindo, has dumped the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for the opposition Allied Peoples Movement (APM), over seeming irreconcilable differences.

Barkindo’s departure, formally communicated in a letter dated October 26, 2026, and addressed to the Chairman of APC, Makama A Ward, marks another high-profile political movement in Yola South as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections gather momentum.

In the letter, the former local government administrator announced his withdrawal from the APC, stressing that his decision was personal and informed by his political preferences.

“I wish to officially notify you that I have withdrawn my membership registration from the All Progressives Congress (APC) with effect from the above date. My withdrawal is personal,” he stated.

Barkindo’s political credentials and administrative experience make his departure noteworthy. He served twice as Secretary of Yola South Local Government and also held the position of Acting Chairman, giving him considerable exposure to grassroots administration and local political structures.

A retired Permanent Secretary, Barkindo is also regarded as a prominent political figure with considerable respect and followership within Yola South.

His movement from the ruling party to the APM adds another dimension to the changing political alignments in Adamawa State, particularly as opposition parties position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
