Staff of Gotel Television and Gotel A.M radio are currently protesting the non payment of their four months salary as priam group, the umbrella brand of former vice president Atiku Abubakar’s companies, planned to shutdown the operations of two media outfits on July 1 over cash crunch.

This paper learnt that due to liquidity issues, the management of Priam group deemed it fit to take the critical decision with a promissory note to give owed staff 25% of their unpaid remunerations.

A staff of the organization who does not want to be quoted said, the staff of the company have vowed not to allow the company to shortchange them as they demand full payment of their four months salary.

The staff confided in our reporter that the development was sequel to a meeting between the management of the priam group and the leadership of NUJ and RATTAWU where the organization intimated the two unions of its decision to shutdown the operations of the two media outfits.
“There was a meeting between the leadership of NUJ, RATTAWU and the management of Priam group where the latter told the two unions that they have concluded arrangements to shutdown the operations of the two outfits come July 1.
“But the bone of contention is the fact that the group is saying that it will only pay 25 % of our 4 months remuneration we owed the company.
“We are saying no to this impunity because it will be double tragedy for us to lose both our jobs and legitimate earnings at this critical time when inflation, and naira devaluation have rendered our currency almost useless.
“Priam group has a right to shutdown its media outfits but not without paying us our complete remuneration,” the staff said.
On what they intend to do on 1st July, the staff said they are mobilizing to ensure that no such action take place until their entitlements are settled.
This paper also learnt that the priam group intends to continue with the operations of Gotel FM and intends to employ the services of 15 existing staff of the organization.
The media outfits owned by the former vice president have been going through a bevy of financial crisis resulting in the takeover of the former Gotel communications Ltd, the company managing Gotel TV, Gotel FM and Gotel AM by the priam group.
The organization some few years ago have gone through similar challenge resulting in serious outcries by staff over withholding of salaries for several months by the company.
The company later fired a significant number of staff in its resolve to address the liquidity issues it was facing then.
The staff noted that “Priam group is owing Gotel staff four months salaries, two years leave & transport grant, severance package of previous retrenchment, among other entitlements.
“In the face of the haughtiness, all staff of the two organization will embark on a street walk chanting ‘Pay us our entitlements from July 1.”
