Jimeta deanery wins first edition of Bishop Dami Mamza football competition
Jimeta deanery has on Thursday emerged winner of the maiden edition of Bishop Dami Mamza football tournament by beating Numan deanery with a lone goal in the finals of the competition which took place at St Peters Minor Seminary, Jimeta.
Jimeta deanery which controlled the game with their exuberant performance, scored the lone unreplied goal through Yuguda Ishaya in the first half of the game.
Eight deaneries of Yola Catholic diocese namely; Jimeta deanery, Gombi deanery, Numan deanery, Yola deanery, Mapeo deanery, Ganye deanery, Mayo Belwa deanery and Vunoklang deanery participated in the competition which kicked off on June 23, 2023.

The competition was organized by the Laity Council of the Diocese with the aim of spreading the gospel of the lord through competitive endeavors.

In his remark shortly after presenting the trophy to Jimeta deanery and other awards to deserving players, Bishop Dami Mamza who was visibly elated, thanked the laity council for the wisdom to come up with such a promising competition.
“This is a wonderful initiative from the laity. It is another way and tool for evangelization. Bringing youths for one week to have this tournament is something that is good for the church and the gospel.

“This is just the beginning and I’m sure in the future we are going to organize something much better than what we had together,” Mamza said.
He emphasized that the event was solely organized and funded by the laity council of Yola Diocese noting that his only role is to bless and support the good initiative.
“This is not my initiative it was actually initiated by the diocesan laity council of the Catholic church. They came and informed me about it and I gave them permission to go ahead,” he said.
Also speaking on the rationale of organizing the competition, Rev. Fr. Justin Daboh, the Catholic chaplain of the laity council of Catholic diocese of Yola, said the competition was brought to enhance the spirit of unity, cohesion and sportsmanship in the diocese.
He thanked Bishop Dami Mamza for supporting their ideas to fruition noting that such overwhelming support led to the overall success of the competition.
Daboh promised to improve on the competition in the future for the benefit of Yola Diocese especially in bringing peace, unity and sportsmanship amongst members of the Catholic diocese.
“The game fraternize us, the game unite us and made us collaborative people to build the kingdom of god,” he said.
