Rivers APC denies ceding ministerial slot to Wike, urges Tinubu to respect party supremacy
The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has refuted claims that it has allocated the ministerial slot of the state to former Governor Nyesom Wike.
In a statement released in Port Harcourt, the party emphasized the importance of President Bola Tinubu honoring party supremacy and not considering Wike for the appointment.
It noted that contrary to media reports, the party has no intention to offer the ministerial slot to Nyesom Wike.
The party clarified that it had never engaged with the Amalgamated Bola Tinubu Campaign Council, which had suggested otherwise.
The spokesman, Darlington Nwauju, emphasized that only the officially recognized party structure holds the authority to make such decisions.
Nwauju also stated that Tony Okocha, the head of the campaign council, was not a member of the party, and therefore, his claims lacked credibility. The party dismissed these allegations as attempts to further Wike’s political ambitions.
Rivers APC questioned the eligibility of Nyesom Wike for a ministerial appointment under the APC ruling federal government.
The party pointed out that Wike had sponsored multiple court actions against Rivers APC, obstructed their campaign activities, and denied them access to public facilities during the 2023 elections.
They questioned the logic of rewarding someone who had been a staunch opponent and had taken actions to undermine the party’s success.
The party highlighted the inconsistency of considering Wike, a member of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), for a ministerial position in the APC-led government.
Rivers APC emphasized that the burden lies on President Bola Tinubu to uphold the principles of party loyalty and supremacy.
They urged Tinubu not to jeopardize the unity and integrity of the APC by appointing Wike to the ministerial position meant for Rivers State.
The party reminded Tinubu of the existence of an official APC structure in Rivers State and stated that granting the slot to a former PDP governor would be detrimental to the party’s interests.
They called on Tinubu’s who they described as a man of immense experience and wisdom to make a decision that aligns with the party’s values and priorities.
The party reaffirmed its commitment to party supremacy and called on President Bola Tinubu to respect this principle. As the speculation continues, it remains to be seen how Tinubu will navigate the delicate balance between party loyalty and political considerations.
