Fuel subsidy removal: Zulum commissions 80 free vehicles in Borno
Governor, Babagana Zulum, has launched a fleet of 80 vehicles consisting of buses, tricycles, and pick-up vans to provide free transportation for residents in Maiduguri Metropolis and Jere Local Council.

The governor stated that 30 pick-up vans have been hired specifically to facilitate the safe commuting of farmers to their farmlands within a 10-kilometer radius of Maiduguri.

He expressed concern over the significant increase in transportation costs, exceeding 100 percent, as a result of the fuel subsidy removal.
In response to this challenge, the government has taken the proactive measure of providing 80 buses and 30 pick-up vans to ensure farmers can access their farmlands during this year’s cropping season.
Addressing a large gathering of farmers, the governor urged them to cooperate with the troops of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), who would be accompanying them to various farming communities.
Governor Zulum assured the farmers that security personnel, including the police and other security agencies, would be deployed on the roads to ensure their safety. He expressed deep gratitude to the military for their sacrifices in protecting the people accessing farmlands across the state.
“By launching this transportation initiative, Governor Zulum aims to mitigate the adverse effects of the subsidy removal on the cost of living, particularly for farmers who heavily rely on affordable transportation to access their farmlands.
“The provision of these vehicles will not only contribute to the economic well-being of the farmers but also enhance agricultural productivity in the state.
“Furthermore, the implementation of this free transportation service aligns with the governor’s commitment to the welfare of the people of Borno State.
“Recognizing the crucial role of agriculture in the state’s economy, he is determined to ensure that farmers have the necessary support to thrive in their agricultural pursuits.
“This initiative will enable farmers to overcome the financial challenges posed by the increased transportation costs, allowing them to focus on their core activities and improve food production in the region.I
“In addition to the economic benefits, the transportation service also highlights the governor’s focus on security.
“By providing security escorts for the farmers, Governor Zulum is demonstrating his commitment to safeguarding their well-being and ensuring a conducive environment for agricultural activities.
“The presence of security personnel on the roads will deter potential threats and create a sense of security for the farmers during their commute.
“Governor Zulum’s efforts to support farmers and address the impact of the subsidy removal on transportation costs are commendable.
“The launch of these vehicles is a practical step towards alleviating the financial burden faced by the residents, particularly the farming community. This initiative not only provides immediate relief but also demonstrates the government’s proactive approach to finding solutions to the challenges faced by the people of Borno State.
