Kiss-A-Thon: Ekiti bans three-day marathon kissing event
The Ekiti State Government has issued a ban on a three-day kissing marathon event known as “Kiss-A-Thon,” organized by a youth group called Sugar Tee.
The event, scheduled to commence on July 7, 2023, at a local hospitality venue, has been deemed absurd, unhealthy, immoral, and capable of tarnishing the state’s reputation.
In a letter addressed to the Hoteliers Association, the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Tourism, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Dele Ogunsemoyin, expressed concerns about the event’s contradiction to the state’s values and its potential negative impact on the moral fabric of the youth.

However, the government strongly condemned the event, citing its absurdity, detrimental health effects, immoral nature, and potential to damage the state’s image. Furthermore, it highlighted that such a program contradicts the deeply ingrained values held by the people of Ekiti State and could lead to a moral regression among the youth.
The letter stated, “The attention of the state government has been drawn to a planned hosting of ‘Kiss-A-Thon’ in Ekiti State.
“According to information at the disposal of the ministry, Kiss-A-Thon, a three-day kissing marathon event, has been scheduled to hold on July 7, 2023, at one of the hospitality outlets in the state.
“This event is said to be planned towards setting a Guinness World Record. ‘Kiss-A-Thon,’ as an event, is not only absurd, unhealthy, immoral, and capable of denigrating the image of the state, but it is a program that runs counter to the values of the people of the state and therefore capable of plunging youths morally backward.
“Recognizing the potential repercussions of the event, the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Tourism prohibited the hosting of the Kiss-A-Thon event and any similar events that could tarnish the state’s reputation or violate its values,” the statement said.
The ministry requested the cooperation of the Ekiti State Hoteliers’ Association in conveying the contents of the notice to its members.
The hoteliers were urged to diligently monitor their establishments to prevent their venues from being utilized for activities that may cause embarrassment to the government and the people of Ekiti State.
By taking this decisive action, the Ekiti State Government aims to safeguard the moral integrity of its youth and protect the image of the state from being negatively portrayed.
“The authorities firmly believe that events like Kiss-A-Thon have the potential to disrupt the societal fabric by encouraging unhealthy behavior and promoting immoral acts. It is essential to prioritize values that align with the cultural and ethical standards of the state and foster an environment conducive to the growth and development of the youth.

“The Ministry of Arts, Culture and Tourism, through a letter signed by Permanent Secretary Dele Ogunsemoyin, emphasized the event’s inconsistency with the values held by the people of Ekiti State. The government urges the cooperation of the Ekiti State Hoteliers’ Association in preventing the use of their facilities for activities that may bring embarrassment to the state.
“These laudable actions will save us from ridicule and moral depravity amongst the comity of states,” Chief Bisi Dapo, a public affairs analyst said.
