According to a leaked letter dated July 19, the Lagos State Government Public Procurement Agency approved the award of a contract to Messrs Tos Funeral Ltd for the mass burial of 103 victims of the 2020 #ENDSARS protests.

The total cost of the burial was stated as N61,285,000. The news of this mass burial has sparked concerns and demands for the disclosure of the victims’ identities and the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
Amnesty International’s Response and Demands
Amnesty International Nigeria’s Director, Isa Sanusi, responded to the leaked document, calling for the Nigerian authorities to halt the secret mass burial plans.
The organization emphasized the urgency of conducting a thorough and independent investigation into the killings and ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice through fair trials.
It also demands that transparent coroner inquests and autopsies be conducted on the 103 #ENDSARS victims and that their identity and the circumstances of their deaths be made public.
In its investigation in 2020, Amnesty International confirmed that security forces had opened fire on thousands of peaceful protesters who were calling for good governance and an end to police brutality.
At least 12 protesters were allegedly killed at the Lekki toll gate and in Alausa during the protests.
The organization also found evidence of pro-government supporters instigating violence during the demonstrations, providing cover for the police to use lethal force against peaceful protesters.
Akin Olaoye, a prominent ENDSARS promoter, expressed dismay over the situation in an interview with a national TV channels.
He disputed the government’s claim that relatives did not show up to claim the bodies, stating that his group presented some of the victims’ relatives at the judicial panel.
According to him, the relatives acknowledged that there was a massacre at Lekki Toll gate when the Nigerian Army opened fire on unarmed protesters on October 20, 2020.
Olaoye advocates for truth and reconciliation instead of dismissing the incident.
The Funeral Firm’s Statement
Contrary to the leaked information, the funeral firm, TOS Funerals Limited, has stated that it has not yet received official approval from the government to proceed with the mass burial.
A staff member identified as Dele clarified that the firm had not received the letter leaked on social media and, therefore, could not speak about it in detail.
