IDE which is commemorated on Jan 24 every year was set aside to highlight the critical link between education and peace, emphasizing how education has a multiplier effect, with the potentials to reduce global conflict, drive economic progress and build a more peaceful and stable world.

Education officer of FAWE, Nigeria, Ibrahim Bello explained that this year’s theme of the IDE “learning for lasting peace” was strategic because of the significant role of peace in the life of any nation.

He noted that the cardinal goal of his organization is to ensure that girls have access to quality education while assisting women to succeed in their chosen fields of endeavors.

Bello noted that the project is funded by the European Union to build the capacities of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) so as to be able to advocate for the right policies to be empaneled in the education sector.

He noted that to achieve that purpose, his organization has trained CSOs on the nuances and rudiments of advocacies towards more budgetary provisions to the education sector adding that in pursuit of that noble objective, the CSOs have paid advocacy visits to both the executive and legislative arms of government to ensure more allocation to the all important sector.

Bello added that education is the bedrock which ensures lasting peace because it teaches people to be tolerant, understand and appreciate each other’s culture and enhances the spirit of give and take, mediation, tolerance respect and accommodation between diverse groups.

During the sessions a number of aptitude tests were carried out to measure the students literacy and numeracy levels. An essay competition was also organized in three categories which produced three outstanding winners.

Appreciating FAWE, the principal of GDSS Luggere, Magret Samuel noted that the training has proven to be useful to the students because they had learnt a lot from the interaction.

She urged the students to utilize the knowledge learnt adding that it is a kind of knowledge that will continue to impact the lives of the students for life.
