Emir of Fika lends weight behind elimination of GBV
• As Sultan foundation commemorates 16 days of activism against GVB In Yobe
The Emir of Fika, Dr. Muhammad Idrisa has reaffirmed the commitment of his emirate towards eliminating Gender Based Violence.
The Emir made the commitment during the commemoration of 16 days of activism against GBV in Yobe State organized by the Sultan foundation for peace and development with support from UN women LEAP Project 2024.
The Emir reiterated his commitment to end GBV through increased sensitization, collaboration, and advocacy to drive for positive social norms change and eliminate all forms of GBV in the communities.
The event tagged “unite to end violence against women and girls was held at the Emir of Fika’s palace in Potiskum town.
The Emir of Fika who double as chairman Yobe state council of traditional rulers emphasized the importance of sensitizing communities on the pressing issue of violence against women and girls.
The Emir thanked SFPD for its laudable efforts at ensuring peace and development of the people, just as he commended the Yobe state government for introducing the violence against persons prohibition law 2022 which he said would help reduce GBV.
Amina Mohammed Ali, project officer who gave an overview of the the sultan foundation said the project is being implemented in four project states to end all forms of violence against women and girls.
She revealed that the foundation was leveraging the structures of traditional and religious leaders to drive the message and GVB.
The event featured a lecture on understanding the GBV concept and it’s harmful effects on the community by Barr Hannatu Farouk Jauro, chairperson of FIDA Yobe.
Discussions on GVB were held by resource persons Malam Hassan Goni Ahmed Baka, while the Emir of Fika led the resolutions and ways forward.
During the discussions, communities noted with dismay some prevalent GBV practices that need to be addressed especially in the home.
The facilitators ensured that discussions centered on the legal, cultural, and religious perspectives and collaborative efforts in tackling the scourge using the appropriate scriptures and promoting positive cultural norms
The 16 days of activism against Gender Based Violence is an annual global initiative that runs from Nov 25 to December 10 highlighting that violence against women is the most pervasive violation of human rights worldwide.
The Fika activity was attended by district heads, Imams, women, and youths.
