GRESP: FAWE, HILWA unveil resilient model for uninterrupted girl education in Adamawa
To ensure girls enjoy seamless and uninterrupted education during their menstrual period, the Forum for African Women Educationalists, (FAWE) in collaboration with High Level Women Advocacy (HILWA) have today pioneered the opening of a sanitary pad bank at Government Day Junior Secondary School (GDJSS) Yelwa, Adamawa State.
The remarkable initiative is designed to promote menstrual hygiene awareness and ensure easy access to sanitary products by menstruating girls in Adamawa State.

Giving a background of the novel initiative, the Education Officer FAWE in Adamawa, Ibrahim Bello, said the initiative embodies FAWE’s core mandate of ensuring that specific needs of both the male and the female children are addressed in line with Gender Responsive Education Sector Plan (GRESP) to ensure education for all.
He noted that FAWE with support from EU-INTPA project: “strengthening civil society to enhance education for all in northern Nigeria” has empowered the CSOs and other critical stakeholders with the skills to mainstream GRESP to ensure gender specific education budgeting in the state.
He expressed optimism that in 2025 budget, subheads for the specific education needs of both gender will be created.
Bello added that FAWE and HILWA deemed it necessary to pioneer the unveiling of the sanitary pad bank in order to ensure that girls also enjoy uninterrupted education during menstrual cycle so as to compete favourably with boys in their academic pursuits.
According to Bello, another goal of the sanitary pad banks is to enable female students have easy access to menstrual hygiene products.
According to UNICEF, about half of the schools in low-income countries lack adequate drinking water, sanitation and hygiene crucial for girls and female teachers to manage their period.
Bello then urged the stakeholders including the state government, corporate bodies and spirited individuals to ensure the success of the initiative for the benefit of girl child education.
He noted that to ensure sustainability, a monitoring team comprising of all stakeholders including SBMC, PTA, NUT has been put in place.
Also speaking, the representative of HILWA, Dr. Hadiza Dauda, noted that because of the greater need to ensure uninterrupted education for menstruating girls, her organization provided 150 packs of sanitary pad to open the sanitary pad bank at GDJSS Yelwa, and to kickstart the initiative in Adamawa State.
She noted that in view of the overarching need for girls to be educated, all hands must be on deck to contribute to the bank and to spread the initiative across all schools in the state.
Thanking FAWE and HILWA for spearheading the noble initiative, Adamawa State Universal Basic Education Board (ADSUBEB), NUT, CSOs, and other critical stakeholders through their representatives pledged to holistically support the noble idea.
They thanked the two organizations for coming together to champion the cause of the menstruating girls noting that the importance of that unique initiative cannot be overemphasized.
