’4000 Yola flood ravaged households face health risks over receipt of expired food’
No fewer than 4000 households devastated by recent devastating flood in Yola South LGA who received relief package distributed by Adamawa State government stand risks of food poisoning and other health complications over receipt of expired foodstuff from the state government.
During interview with newsmen on the sidelines of the distribution of the relief materials, deputy governor of Adamawa State, Professor Kaletapwa Farauta noted that no fewer than 4,000 families will get the relief package.

But a chorus of indignation and public outrage greeted the distribution of what the beneficiaries termed as expired food stuff by the deputy governor, Farauta who doubles as the chairman of relief and post recovery committee on Sunday.
Yola South local government has witnessed a flurry of devastating flood on 26 July 2025 leaving in its wake deaths, displacements and destruction.
The state government has in the wake of the devastating flood constituted a 21-member Relief and Post-Recovery Committee to be chaired by the state deputy governor, Professor Kaletapwa Farauta.
The committee also comprises of representatives from various government agencies, security forces, and community leaders.
Some of the terms of references given to the committee include; identifying measures to bring succor to the affected communities and mapping up strategies to ensure post-flood recovery.
A statement by Humwashi Wonosikou governor Fintiri’s Chief Press Secretary noted that the government was poised to provide relief and support to all affected families.
“We are committed to providing relief and support to affected communities and working towards sustainable solutions to mitigate future disasters,” he said.
The governor further advised the committee to ensure fairness, transparency, and diligence in its work, with the ultimate goal of bringing relief and hope to the affected communities
In the aftermath of the flood, the wife of president Tinubu contributed N500m in addition to donating bales of Ankara fabrics to the state government. Bayelsa State govt also contributed N100m to the state for the sake of the ravaged victims.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), The North East Development Commission (NEDC) as well as other donors and actors also reportedly came to the rescue of the state and contributed towards the humanitarian intervention which was shared on Sunday.
But no sooner than the distribution was over than victims started demonizing the government for being insensitive to their plight by giving them expired foodstuff.
A resident of Modire, one of the areas worst affected by the flood, Yakubu Musa told our reporter that 70 percent of the food items distributed have expired.
”I can tell you that 70 percent of the food items distributed to us yesterday have expired. Almost all the food items including maize, rice, spaghetti, sugar have expired. Some of them have already expired beyond consumption.
”The only materials that have not spoilt are the fabrics, cooking oil, mats and salt. We are ready to bring these items back to the government for proof,” Yakubu said.
He called on the government to constitute a high powered committee to probe the show of shame or lose the immense public trust of the citizens who felt the government does not care a hoot about their well-being especially as they are smarting from the consequences of the flood devastation.
But speaking with our reporter, the head of Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA), Celine La’ori in a phone chat with our reporter dismissed the outcries as the handwork of opposition and mischief makers.
”As far as we are concerned, the items we share don’t have any problems. I don’t know from where these allegations are coming from. It is possible that these allegations are coming from opposition quarters, otherwise from where will these allegations arise,” she said.
