Adamawa ADC on death row as Atiku, Babachir pursue conflicting interests
Adamawa State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is currently on a death row and may finally whither over unresolved, lingering crisis that has continued to rock the party since inception.
The latest imbroglio that may finally nail the coffin of the party in the state followed revelations that two leaders of the party, former vice president Atiku Abubakar and former SGF Babachir David Lawal are pursuing conflicting interests and according to party sources, none of the two parties is willing to shift grounds.

This reporter learnt that currently, the party is divided into three splinter groups. Before the latest crisis erupted, the party had waded through serious leadership crisis between the Shehu Yohanna and Mustapha Arabi led factions which necessitated the intervention of the former vice president Atiku Abubakar who is the leader of the party in the state. In order to bring back sanity, and cohesion the former VP brought up the Saidu Komsiri led faction.
The coming of the Komsiri led exco at the behest of the former vice president, has sparked anxiety recently in the party as major stakeholders including former governor Umaru Jibrilla Bindow threatened to dump the party.
But no sooner than reports of such rebellion came to the fore than stakeholders led by Bindow held an emergency meeting at the Asokoro residence of the former vice president where they assured him of their unflinching support, their commitment to internal party democracy and resolve to remain in the ADC to challenge the ruling APC in 2027.
Our correspondent learnt that those present at the meeting include the former governor Muhammad Umaru Jibrilla Bindow, former SSG, Babachir David Lawal, Sen. Ishaku Aboo amongst other notable party stakeholders.
But party sources said that meeting was just a gimmick to buy time by the ‘rebellious’ group led by Lawal who later vowed to resist the Komsiri led leadership with the last drop of their blood.
To that effect, the group surreptitiously met behind the scene where they came they came up with a counter offensive by hoisting another exco led by former speaker of Adamawa State house of assembly, Barr. Sadiq Dasin.
With the coming of Dasin led faction, the party in Adamawa has three parallel and active factions claiming legitimacy of the party leadership.
But one major indicator of the leadership imbroglio is the fact that the former vice president who single handedly midwifed the coalition to life in Nigeria is losing grip and control of his homestead which is a major setback to his influence and even ambition to contest the 2027 polls on the crest of the party’s platform.
Information obtained by our reporter indicated that the party’s lingering crisis will lead to its collapse going by the extent of recrimination within the identified blocks. A senior stakeholder of the party, who does not want his name in print
told our reporter that the crisis in the party has reached breaking point as contending parties vowed to resist each other.
”As it is now, ADC in Adamawa is totally on the verge of irreversible collapse as contending parties have vowed to resist each other. On one divide of the conflict is a group led by Babachir loyalist, Dasin and on the other, is another group led by Komsiri and supported by the former vice president, Atiku Abubakar.
”I will tell you with all sense of seriousness that as it is, the party is seriously on intensive care. If Atiku succeed in this battle and Komsiri remain the party chairman I will confidently tell you that people like Sen. Abbo,Umar Sulaiman, Sen AbdulAziz Nyako, Sen. Bindow will all leave the party.
”On the other hand, stakeholders loyal to Atiku like Sen. Binani, Sen Barata and Mijinyawa Kugama will leave the party. So right now the situation in Adamawa ADC is dicey, unprecedented and highly volatile,” he said.
