LND condemns extrajudicial massacre of 16 northerners in Edo
The League of Northern Democrats (LND) has in a strong worded language condemned the extrajudicial killing of 16 northerners in Edo State.
The victims were intercepted by an angry mob in Udune Efandion, Uromi Edo State and summarily killed in a bizarre and dehumanizing situation while on transit from PortHarcourt to northern Nigeria to celebrate the sallah festivities with loved ones.

A statement signed by the spokesman of LND Dr. Salihu Ladan and made available to this medium noted that the senseless pattern of killing northerners in the Southern part of the country must be stopped for peace and order to prevail in the country.
“This senseless act of mob violence, fueled by ignorance and lawlessness, is an affront to the fundamental principles of justice, human dignity and national unity.
“It is deeply troubling that in a country governed by laws, innocent citizens were profiled, falsely accused and brutally murdered in broad daylight – without investigation, without trial and without intervention from the appropriate authorities. The gruesome manner in which these Nigerians were slaughtered, their bodies burned and their dignity desecrated is beyond horrifying. And this is not the first time such atrocities are committed in Edo state against northerners. It is a stark reminder of the dangerous rise of ethnic profiling, mob injustice and the total breakdown of law and order in certain parts of our nation.
“The LND commends the Federal Government, the Edo State Government and all security agencies for the prompt action taken to conduct a thorough and swift investigation into this atrocity. The LND is happy that the perpetrators – both those who carried out this barbarism
and those who incited it – are being searched and investigated. We hope they will be arrested, prosecuted and made to face the full weight of the law. Anything short of this will amount to a grievous failure of governance and justice,” the statement said.
The organization then called on the federal government to institute an impartial inquest into the killings involving security agencies and human rights organizations.
It also called for the swift arrest and prosecution of all those involved in this criminal act, including those who incited, participated in or failed to prevent it. It also urged the government to put in place strong measures against mob justice across the country, ensuring that such barbarity never repeats itself; and
adequately compensate and support the families of the victims, as well as prompt
medical care for the survivors.
LND also called on all northerners to remain calm and not take the law into their hands as efforts are made to ensure justice for the victims and their families.
