Adamawa kicks off fresh wild polio vaccination from 11 – 14 Nov 2023

Adamawa State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (ASPHCDA) has kicked off another round of 4-day intensive wild polio vaccination from 11 – 14 November 2023.

The vaccination which will hold simultaneously across the 226 wards of the state will capture all children within 0 – 59 months age bracket.

Shedding light on the rationale behind the new round of wild polio vaccination, during a state level media parley with newsmen, the executive chairman of Adamawa State Healthcare Development Agency (ASPHCDA), Dr. Sulaiman Saidu Bashir said the aim is to strengthen the immunity of children against the dreaded virus.

He noted that the new round of vaccination will ensure that Nigeria maintains its certification as free from the virus.

Bashir noted that for Nigeria to maintain that position it has to ramp up the immunity of children through routine immunization. He said the strategy will ensure strengthening the immunity of those who have been vaccinated as well as capture new born children.

The executive chairman noted that some risks factors including migration, insecurity, peripatetic nature of Nigerians and environment factors necessitate the need to administer the vaccination in order to checkmate susceptibilities and possible incursion of the disease.

While giving a run down of the success of the first round of the vaccination campaign, Bashir said his agency targeted 1.29 million children but at the end of the exercise it covered 1.3 children which represents 103% of the target population.

The executive chairman noted that the vaccine is safe, efficacious, efficient and has global recognition adding that previous exercises have confirmed that it has mild adverse effects as only 23 such cases were presented out of 1.3 children who received the vaccine.

He noted that to ensure the success of the exercise, 1,8011 personnel in teams of 3 have been deployed adding that to ensure the overall success locals were usually deployed to their places of origin to operate. He said such strategy has ramped up the success of the exercise even in insecurity prone areas as personnel working in such areas usually deploy “hit and run” tactics to administer such vaccination.

Bashir thanked the media, the traditional institutions and particularly the state government for their untiring support leading to the success of the agency in all areas of operational endeavors. He noted that such support made ASPHCDA to record 100% success in all it’s operations and made it to earn national acclaims.
