Northeast Governors meet, vow to address emerging security challenges
The North-East Governors’ Forum (NEGF) has reaffirmed its commitment to regional cooperation, security, and economic integration at its 11th meeting held on May 1, 2025, in Damaturu, Yobe State.
The Forum, which comprises the Governors of Adamawa, Borno, Gombe, Taraba, and Yobe States alongside the Deputy Governor of Bauchi State representing his principal met under the chairmanship of Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, the governors commended the Federal Government’s ongoing security initiatives and pledged full support in confronting the region’s emerging security threats.
Expressing deep concern over the resurgence of insurgent activities, the Forum called on security forces, local leaders, and relevant stakeholders to reassess and reinforce their counter-insurgency operations.
Acknowledging that military efforts alone cannot solve the region’s security woes, the governors emphasized a holistic approach that tackles root causes such as poverty, youth unemployment, and weak infrastructure.
The Forum also drew attention to the dire state of road infrastructure and the negative implications of abandoned federal projects, urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to act swiftly in resuscitating these critical assets.
On the economic front, the governors reaffirmed their dedication to diversifying the region’s economy through increased investment, improved agricultural output, climate adaptation, and youth empowerment programs to curb insurgent recruitment.
The Forum stressed the need for enhanced collaboration with the Northeast Development Commission (NEDC), urging the body to align its programs with state-level priorities—especially in key sectors like roads, education, and healthcare.
The meeting concluded with a united call for sustained regional solidarity and proactive governance to secure a better future for the people of the North-East.
